I grew to admire the people that began this village and all the people that had ever inhabited it. I liked the juxtaposition of the antique buildings next to a McDonald's. It helps to preserve the memories of an earlier, simpler time and people. My last visit back to Sicily was spring, 2000. This time I had a mission. While my sister, brother-in-law, and two-year-old nephew were along this journey, I decided I wanted to chronicle what I saw in as much detail as I could. My sister had been there before, but my brother-in-law and nephew were first-timers. This was going to be an experience like they'd never had before, and I wanted to capture it all. Exposed roll after roll of film, I crossed my fingers that the camera could pick up what my eyes and heart saw. Some of these images mean things that I cannot explain, and most of them will evoke a question. It may be why. It might even be what. But any questions that come to mind mean that the photographs have served my purpose, to show the history, the antiquity, the food, and the beauty of a little corner of the world. Nor many people can appreciate the smell of the Mediterranean in the morning when the fishermen come back with their catch. Even fewer can walk down the cobblestone street and know exactly what each home is cooking for dinner. I hope these photographs will you allow you a taste of these experiences.
